*THIS REVIEW IS ABOUT THE KAI SERIES, NOT THIS DVD SET*
-It may be wrong of me to review a product I don’t own, but after having viewed eight or so episodes, I thought I would share the opinion I got from the series since there were no customer reviews. You know… just sharing what I learned.-
ANOTHER DBZ box set?
Yes, and it’s not even Funimation’s fault this time.
Dragon Ball Kai is being aired in Japan to celebrate DB/Z’s 20th anniversary. It is a “new series” based on the original anime.
What this means is:
- Most important thing: It is a condensed version of DBZ (the
Japanese word “kai” is literally translated into English
as “revised”). They cut out the “filler”(I.E. Goku reaches the
end of Snake Way and catches Bubbles and Gregory before episode
9) to make the story move faster [and follow more closely with the manga].
>I believe this impairs the show. You don’t get the character
background you need to actually care about the story.
In my opinion, Dragon Ball/DBZ/DBGT is an excellent
action/comedy/drama anime series the way it was ORIGINALLY
created, and Toei shouldn’t ’stand on ceremony’.<
- Remastered/redone animation. High Def / Widescreen.
Most of the new artwork is re-drawn over the original tracings.
- Re-recorded soundtrack. Many of the original Japanese voice actors
returned for this project.
The musical score is also new.
Of course Funimation is dubbing it, too.
If you thought the series was too long and drawn out, this might be the way for you to watch it.
I, for one, have purchased numerous Dragon Ball DVD sets just to get every episode as they were originally made. Sometimes I bought the first few volumes just so Funimation could discontinue the sets. Other times (*cough* DBZ Season sets *cough*) I spent my money on “the definitive set” just so it (and its cropped picture, I mean… wide-screen format) could fill shelf space while I awaited the release of the actual definitive set (Dragon Box Z).
DB Kai is somewhat reminiscent of the DB movie Path to Power. The GT animators retold the entire Red Ribbon Army saga (68 episodes) in around 80 minutes. The animation in the movie was one hundred times better than that of the show, and they included most of the great moments from the show. The movie was very good (and you get all the major plot points), but you still miss a lot of good story if you don’t watch the 68 episodes.
The difference between Path to Power and DB Kai is that they made Path to Power from scratch, and they are basically cutting pieces out and recycling DBZ (more so than Funimation did when they originally dubbed the show) to make Kai. Which would all be well and fine, except that I have already been brain-washed to want EVERY EPISODE!!! UNCUT!!!
In conclusion:
I don’t see how anyone besides people who are already fans would be interested in DB Kai, and those people will probably be disappointed after watching a few episodes. Some may enjoy watching a series that’s been edited to reproduce the same flow as that of the manga, but it only made me miss those little Dragon Ball moments that hooked me in the first place.
In its defense, it does have SUPERIOR audio and video quality, but I don’t think that is worth losing good content. Your opinion may differ.

Did they need to release Dragonball Kai? No…. This “series” is just a cut and paste job. I’ve read reviews and people are saying “OH, THIS IS BETTER BECAUSE WE CAN WATCH IT HOW IT WAS INTENDED TO BE” That is so goofy to me. If you own the other sets and you’re some Dragonball nerd, expert guy then just skip past the episodes you know are filler if it bothers you so much. I don’t see why you would do that though because you understand the characters more with the extra content. If you don’t like the filler episodes read the freaking manga. (Which you probably already have, but just like to be annoying)
I love how they put “Z” on the box. I’m sure Funi did this because they think it will give this release better sales but I think it’s going to do the opposite. As ‘Dragonball Kai’ without the Z they could have at least fooled people into thinking this is a new Dragonball series. Who’s going to buy this now besides overly obsessed “Hardcore fans”? I bet you any money Kai will be discontinued.

Dragonball Kai is pretty cool! The thing with Kai is that its a faster storyboard, so instead of wasting 2 minutes at looking at Goku & Vegeta looking at eachother, its maybe only 20 seconds? Pretty neat. I like it a lot! The price, eh, its a little disgusting.
-The thing I love the MOST about DB/Z/GT is that it is like a Christian show!!
Goku is the one who always leads everyone the correct way, He is the savior of the world! (Symbolic to God leading us the right way & being our Savior!)
Goku trains & helps his friends to become good fighters (Symbolic to God “training” us in His Word)
Goku trusts in his friends knowing they will do the right thing. (Symbolic to God trusting that His true followers will obey Him & go His way)
Goku always shows love & mercy even to his enemies & evil people. (Symbolic to God showing all us people, whom have broken His Perfect Law -The Ten Commandments- and yet He still gives us Mercy to flee from sin & follow Him)
Goku believes anyone can change their life from bad, to good. (Symbolic to fleeing from our sins & following the Will of God)
Goku was like a father, always protecting people from evil (Symbolic to how God protects us from evil & when the storms comes, He’s still with us)
Everytime it seems hopeless & like evil will prevail & there is no way out, Goku is always there to help! (Symbolic to no matter how strong the temptation or urge is, God always provides a way out for us because He is with us)
When the Saiyans or other fighters feel like there is no hope, they go into a new level of strength (Symbolic to when you are weakest you are strongest)
Like with us when we feel we can’t resist the temptation or do the Will of God, we still press on and reach a new level or strength…..haha, like a Spiritual Super Saiyan, being much stronger into & with God then we were before.
When the fighters are fighting & they feel there is no hope, someone else usually comes to the aid (Symbolic to God will never leave us & He always provides help)
DBZ is not only a great show but I look at it through a Christian sense, look at it as a Christian sense, it’s symbolic, it’ll make it 10x better! I know it did for me!

I have seen most of the saiyan saga from kai and I have to say that this is going to be a cool experience. My suggestion is if you want to watch dragon ball z on a quick holiday brake pick this up. I’m a hardcore dragon ball fan so this is a must have for me. The opening music is great and really is in my opinion a nice alteration to the classic cha la head cha la. If your a new fan to the show I say pick this up and then go back and pick up the dragon boxes or season sets so you can have all the story from z. I’m disappointed about the voice re-cast’s for gohan bulma the narrator puar and chautzu but I’m going into this experience with an open mind of this being a different adaption of z. All in all this is the start of an amazing collection I look forward to obtaining.
